Hardik Pandya to Join Vijay Hazare Trophy Action This Saturday After Change of Heart
A week after reports indicated that Hardik Pandya would not participate in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, the all-rounder has had a change of heart. The latest update from the Baroda camp reveals that Pandya will now feature in the 50-over tournament starting Saturday, December 28.
Pandya, who had initially withdrawn due to personal reasons, is now ready to play in Baroda's third-round match against Bengal in Hyderabad. The team, captained by his brother Krunal Pandya, has had an impressive start to the tournament, winning both of their opening games – a dominant victory over Tripura and a hard-fought win against Kerala. The Bengal game will be their third match after a five-day gap, and Pandya's inclusion is expected to further boost the squad's strength.
Ajit Lele, Secretary of the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA), shared the news with Cricbuzz on Friday night, stating, "He had some personal issues earlier, which is why he wasn’t available for the first few games. But now he has reached Hyderabad and will be playing tomorrow."
Pandya's decision to play in the tournament is seen as a positive sign, especially considering the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the national selection committee’s emphasis on domestic participation. It is also believed that selectors will be watching closely, as Pandya is a key figure ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy in February-March.
Originally, Pandya was expected to join the VHT only from the knockout stages, scheduled to take place in his hometown from January 9. The 31-year-old all-rounder has not played a non-T20 match since his ankle injury during the World Cup last October, but his recent performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and the IPL have demonstrated his fitness and form.
Pandya played a vital role in Baroda's run to the semifinals of the SMAT, scoring 246 runs and claiming six wickets in seven matches. His return to the VHT is crucial not only for his personal preparation but also for Baroda's prospects in the competition. Pandya's presence will be pivotal as the tournament progresses, with important games against teams like Bihar, MP, and Delhi on the horizon.
With the Champions Trophy approaching, Pandya’s performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy will be key for his selection, and the spotlight will be firmly on him as he returns to 50-over cricket.
