Australia Make Key Changes Ahead of Final Two BGT Tests: McSweeney Dropped, Konstas Called Up
Australia has made significant changes to their squad for the final two Border-Gavaskar Tests, with opener Nathan McSweeney dropped after a string of disappointing performances. McSweeney, who struggled with scores of 10, 0, 39, 10*, 9, and 4 across the first three Tests, makes way for rising star Sam Konstas. The 19-year-old New South Wales opener, who was initially in the running to replace David Warner, has impressed with recent form, including an unbeaten 73 against India A and a 107 in the Prime Minister's XI warm-up game. Konstas also scored an 88 for New South Wales and a quick-fire 56 for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League.
Chair of Selectors, George Bailey, expressed confidence in Konstas’ potential, highlighting his unique batting style. "Sam offers a point of difference, and we’re excited to watch his development at the Test level," Bailey said.
While McSweeney’s omission was tough, Bailey emphasized the long-term potential for the opener, stating, “We believe Nathan has the ability to succeed at Test level in the future." The decision comes after Australia’s struggles at the top of the order during the series, prompting a lineup change for the remaining matches.
In addition, with Josh Hazlewood ruled out, Australia has recalled fast bowlers Sean Abbott and Beau Webster, while Jhye Richardson also joins the squad, providing extra pace options.
With fresh faces and new energy, Australia will look to finish the Border-Gavaskar series on a high.
