BCCI Confirms SGM on January 12 to Elect New Secretary and Treasurer
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially scheduled a Special General Meeting (SGM) for January 12, 2025, in Mumbai. The key agenda for the meeting will be the election of a new secretary and treasurer, following the resignation of Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar from their respective positions.
The decision to convene the SGM comes after Jay Shah vacated the position of secretary to take up the role of Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC), while Ashish Shelar stepped down as treasurer due to his new role in the Maharashtra Government. According to ICC regulations, the Chairperson cannot have formal ties with any member association, and BCCI’s constitution bars ministers from holding office-bearer positions, prompting their departures.
In the interim, Devajit Saikia has been appointed as the acting secretary, after the BCCI president exercised special constitutional powers. However, the treasurer’s role remains unfilled. The SGM will finalize the election process, with nominations being open on January 3 and 4, followed by scrutiny and the final list of candidates being announced by January 7.
The electoral process will follow a set timeline:
- December 21: Call for Members to File Nominations
- December 27: Deadline for Submission of Nominations
- December 28: Draft Electoral Roll Released
- December 29 & 30: Objections to Draft Roll
- January 2: Final Electoral Roll Released
- January 3 & 4: Nominations Accepted
- January 6: Scrutiny of Nominations and Announcement of Valid Candidates
- January 7: Final List and Withdrawal Deadline
- January 12: BCCI By-Election and Results Declaration
With the election scheduled for January 12, 2025, all eyes will be on the BCCI as it moves towards appointing its new office-bearers and shaping the future leadership of Indian cricket.
