BCCI to Elect New Secretary and Treasurer in Special General Meeting by Mid-January

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai by January 12 to elect two new office-bearers—Secretary and Treasurer—after the resignations of Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar. This critical meeting comes in the wake of significant changes within the board and follows the resignation of Shah on November 30, as he assumed the role of Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC), and Shelar's departure on December 15 after being inducted into the Maharashtra government.

The decision to convene the SGM was made during an emergent Apex Council meeting held virtually on Thursday evening, with notices for the meeting being sent out just a day earlier. This expedited process highlights the importance and urgency of filling these crucial positions in time for the busy cricketing calendar ahead.

Under BCCI regulations, the SGM must be called with a minimum notice period of 21 days, meaning the meeting will likely take place by January 12—well within the 45-day limit required by the BCCI constitution to fill any vacancies. In the interim, Roger Binny, the BCCI president, has exercised his special powers to temporarily assign the duties of the secretary to Devjit Saikia, the joint secretary. However, as of now, no interim arrangement has been announced for the treasurer's role.

With the SGM date rapidly approaching, the BCCI is expected to finalize the new office-bearers, paving the way for smoother governance and administration of Indian cricket.
