Joe Root Makes ODI Comeback for Champions Trophy
Joe Root has made his return to England’s 50-over squad for the first time since the 2023 World Cup, being named in the 15-man squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy. The same squad will also compete in an ODI series in India ahead of the global event.
Root, who was left out of the 50-over setup after England’s disappointing World Cup campaign, will now join the team under the guidance of Brendon McCullum, England’s new all-format head coach. Root had a modest World Cup, scoring just 276 runs at an average of 30.66, as England opted to bring in younger talent. But with McCullum taking over as head coach, Root’s experience has earned him a recall.
Stokes Injury and Squad Updates
While Ben Stokes was also expected to return, his recovery from a recent hamstring injury sustained during the final Test against New Zealand has kept him out of the ODI squad.
The 15-man squad for both the ODI series in India and the Champions Trophy features a strong bowling lineup, led by Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, along with Saqib Mahmood, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Jamie Overton. Jacob Bethell's recent rise has earned him his first ICC tournament call-up, while Jamie Smith is also included. Will Jacks has been left out.
