Sam Konstas Ready for the Challenge of Facing Bumrah in Boxing Day Test
Australia’s rising star, Sam Konstas, is gearing up for his first-ever face-off with the world’s best Test bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, in the upcoming Boxing Day Test at the MCG. At just 19 years old, Konstas was called up to replace Nathan McSweeney in the squad and is excited about the opportunity to test his skills against one of the most feared bowlers in the game.
Though Konstas had an excellent outing during the pink-ball practice match for the Prime Minister’s XI, where he faced India’s pace attack, he didn’t have the chance to face Bumrah as the Indian pacer sat that one out. With the MCG Test fast approaching, Konstas is eager for the challenge but plans to keep his approach simple.
"I won’t watch too much [of Bumrah]. I’ve already seen him a lot. But I’m excited to challenge myself and face him," said Konstas, confident in his abilities despite the hype surrounding Bumrah's remarkable series, where he’s taken 21 wickets in just three Tests. "Usually, our analysts do a little feedback on each bowler. I might read that, maybe."
Konstas, who had been in the running for a spot in the squad alongside McSweeney before the series, now finds himself in the playing XI after McSweeney’s struggles at the top. Konstas’ recent form in the Sheffield Shield has boosted his confidence as he prepares for the big stage. “I’m super confident, just backing my skills,” he said. “I’ve done all the hard work. Just another game, I guess.”
The call-up to the senior squad was an unexpected but thrilling moment for Konstas. He celebrated the news with a simple family dinner, which turned emotional as his mother teared up in pride. "Mum, dad, and my brothers, all their sacrifices, taking me to training, throwing me balls, experiencing the journey through highs and lows—just to give something back to them was very special," Konstas shared.
While the young opener is staying grounded, his excitement is evident as he dreams of representing Australia at the iconic MCG. If given the chance to play, Konstas is ready to take on the challenge head-on, with a mix of youthful enthusiasm and a clear focus on the task at hand.
